SUMMARY:This is America
DESCRIPTION:This is America is a four-part artist talk series curated by Jaime Ransome and presented by the Woodstock School of Art (WSA). The series invites artists to reflect on how cultural\, ethnic\, and ancestral histories shape their practices—whether through technique\, materials\, themes\, or artistic lineage. Informed by Ransome’s curatorial philosophy—community-driven\, historically grounded\, and centered on BIPOC\, feminist\, and queer perspectives—This is America transforms WSA’s gallery into a space of storytelling\, resistance\, and connection.

SUMMARY:Onnis Luque | DOMINIO Opening
DESCRIPTION:Onnis Luque | DOMINIO: An Unfinished Visual Archive of Architectural Extractivism \nSand\, stone\, and earth are among the most extracted materials on the planet—yet their removal is rarely pictured\, let alone understood as foundational to the built environment. In the exhibition DOMINIO: An Unfinished Visual Archive of Architectural Extractivism\, on view in the Newmark Gallery at Art Omi from March 21–May 31\, 2026\, architectural photographer Onnis Luque traces these often-invisible origins of construction back to the raw landscapes from which they are born. \nThese photographs challenge the dominant visual culture of architecture\, which glorifies pristine forms while obscuring the socio-ecological violence embedded in their production. They reveal a terrain shaped not just by machines\, but by ideologies: capitalism\, modernism\, colonialism\, and the myth of nature as inexhaustible resource. \nFree and open to the public.\nRSVP essential

SUMMARY:Invocation: Vuyo Sotashe & Chris Pattishall
DESCRIPTION:In this highly anticipated collaboration\, South African vocalist Vuyo Sotashe and American pianist/composer Chris Pattishall come together for an intimate and soulful evening of duets. Mainstays of the NYC music scene over the last decade\, Sotashe and Pattishall have each contributed to a wide range of projects spanning jazz\, gospel\, theater\, and film. Together\, Sotashe and Pattishall make music with a hushed vulnerability. \nFor this special engagement at The Local\, the program will range from the American masters of Duke Ellington and Nina Simone to South African Xhosa hymns and Stevie Wonder\, bringing the healing power of music to the forefront. They will also celebrate the release of their forthcoming EP\, Invocation. \nSince moving to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar\, Vuyo Sotashe has performed with celebrated jazz legends including Wynton Marsalis\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Jimmy Heath\, George Benson\, Al Jarreau\, Barry Harris\, and Winard Harper. He has appeared at Montreux Jazz Festival\, Monterey Jazz Festival\, Cape Town International Jazz Festival\, Newport Jazz Fest\, Joy of Jazz\, and Arcevia Jazz Festival. Described as “a bright tenor that can easily spring from sonorous depths to the full-bodied top of his impressive range” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)\, Sotashe made his off-Broadway debut in the Public Theater’s production of Black Light. Chris Pattishall has established himself as “an expert at using the jazz tradition as a jumping off point for experimentation” (JazzTimes) and his debut album Zodiac was called “a startling achievement” (NY Times) and “a hell of a debut album” (Stereogum). He is a featured performer on a wide range of recordings\, from the Grammy-nominated debut album of Jamison Ross to the film scores of Knives Out\, Nightmare Alley\, and the indie sensation Everything Everywhere All At Once. He co-composed the score to the Emmy-winning documentary Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project with Samora Pinderhughes.

SUMMARY:Patterson Hood & John Moreland
DESCRIPTION:Patterson Hood is an acclaimed singer-songwriter\, guitarist\, and co-founder of the Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. His newest solo album\, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams\, produced by Chris Funk (The Decemberists) will be released via ATO Records in February 2025. Hood has also released solo albums such as Killers and Stars (2004) and Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance (2012)\, showcasing his versatility as a songwriter. Whether fronting the Truckers or performing solo\, Patterson Hood remains a vital force in modern music\, celebrated for his ability to turn life’s raw realities into compelling\, soul-stirring art\, and continues to be a powerful voice in contemporary Americana and Southern rock. \nDrawing inspiration from storytelling traditions and a passion for rock\, country\, and soul\, Hood’s music often explores themes of Southern identity\, social justice\, and personal introspection. While best known as frontman\, singer\, songwriter\, and guitar player for Drive-By Truckers\, he is also a writer of essays\, columns\, and short stories as well as a solo performer and producer. \nJohn Moreland took an entire year off from playing shows and didn’t use a smartphone for 6 months. The result is Visitor\, a folk-rock record that is intimate\, immediate\, deeply thoughtful\, and catchy as hell. Moreland recorded the album at his home in Bixby\, Oklahoma\, in only ten days\, playing nearly every instrument himself (his wife Pearl Rachinsky sang on one song\, and his longtime collaborator John Calvin Abney contributed a guitar solo)\, as well as engineering and mixing the album. “Simplicity and immediacy felt very important to the process\,” he says.
