SUMMARY:Joseph Garlock: An Artist's Legacy
DESCRIPTION:The James Cox Gallery at Woodstock will open its fall season with an exhibit of paintings and sculpture by the prolific\, well-known outsider artist Joseph Garlock (1884-1980). The exhibit will kick off with a public opening reception Friday\, September 4\, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the gallery’s showrooms\, located at 4666 State Route 212 in Willow\, NY.  The entire Garlock exhibit can be viewed at James Cox Gallery. \nJames Cox discovered Garlock’s work in 2000 when the artist’s family approached him about handling their grandfather’s estate. Upon the death of the artist’s daughter Rose\, a long-time resident of \, NY\, Garlock’s grandchildren discovered a huge trove of their grandfather’s paintings and sculpture stored in a shed behind the home Rose shared with her father. “Much of the work was in need of restoration”\, Cox recalled\, “but most of the paintings and sculpture we uncovered are just dazzling.” \nGarlock was a true self-taught artist. After being arrested in Russia as a student radical\, he fled the pogroms with his wife Anna\, arriving at Ellis Island in 1904. He began his life in the United States on New York’s Lower East Side\, eventually moving to Bloomfield\, N.J.\, where he and Anna raised their family. There he worked as a cobbler\, owned a small vegetable market\, and even drove a bus between his home in Bloomfield and Watsessing\, N.J. \nAll the while he was pursuing his passion\, quietly creating artwork from whatever materials were available. He painted on canvas\, as well as cardboard and shirt box lids. He crafted many whimsical sculptures from tree branches\, driftwood\, and plywood. Some of his works were created from imagination; many others were based on magazine photos of famous people or images that intrigued him. \nFor more information\, contact the gallery at 845-679-7608 or email info@jamescoxgallery.com. \nThe exhibit will be on view through October 4. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Iain Machell - SECOND NATURE
DESCRIPTION:All my work begins with observation from nature. I want to know what lies behind the forms and textures –the marks of time and experience written into everything from fossils and rock formations to plants and trees. \nMy drawings and sculptures are partners in crime and dancing partners. Drawing involves investigative mark-making and sculpture is a form of physical thinking. The combination is a material proposition that invites you to look at the world in a completely different way\, to escape words and communicate in a physical way. \nRather than working realistically\, I’d rather look beneath the surface to observe raw energy and a struggle. The forces of growth and decay\, pressure\, time\, and adverse human influences work their way into the tension between 2D and 3D. I don’t want to imitate nature\, I would rather interrogate it. – Iain Machell 2026

SUMMARY:Celebration of Zena: An Immersive Forest Experience
DESCRIPTION:An Evening of Immersive Sounds\, Sights\, and Reciprocity with Local Wilderness\, featuring new work by Zaneta and Zoe Keller \nJoin us for a celebration of our beloved Zena Highwoods through an evening of immersive sounds and sights from our local forest. Featuring the premiere of interdisciplinary sound artist Zaneta Sykes’ Invitations from the Land: the Zena Highwoods\, an eco-ritual of reciprocity based on the artist’s Filipinx traditions of singing to land in offering. Community members will be immersed in a year of forest soundscapes recorded on the solstices and equinoxes in the Zena Highwoods\, interwoven with projections of wildlife illustrations by Zoe Keller\, documented during the same time period in the very same forest. Soundscapes and sightings will blend into the autumnal night chorus\, as the community gathers under the full moon to sing back to the land in a full circle exchange of listening and sound between human and more-than-human kin. \nAs a focal point of connection to the forest\, there will be an art altar space. Community members are welcome to bring items to place on the altar\, such as flowers\, art\, and poetry – offerings of beauty and gratitude for our local wilderness. \nA panel discussion on the Power of Community Art and Science in Local Stewardship will begin the evening\, with Miranda Javid of the Woodstock Land Conservancy\, local artist and Woodstock native Zoe Keller\, and interdisciplinary sound artist and nature recordist Zaneta Sykes. \nThis evening also marks the release of Invitations from the Land: the Zena Highwoods\, an album and book documenting the Zena Highwoods in a year of seasonal recordings and writings by Zaneta Sykes and featuring illustrations by Zoe Keller\, created in partnership with the Woodstock Land Conservancy. Signed copies of the work will be available.
