SUMMARY:Jazz Double-Bill: Joel Harrison Guitar Choir + The Ted Nash Trio
DESCRIPTION:Joel Harrison\, Steve Cardenas\, Gregg Belisle-Chi\, Max Light / Ben Allison\, Steve Cardenas\, Ted Nash Trio \nIn the words of Joel Harrison\, “the guitar can do anything—howl\, whisper\, swing\, groove. It can explore extra terrestrial textures\, play gorgeous harmony and quiet counterpoint\, or cause acid lunatics to dance naked in a field.” And thus his new project\, The Guitar Choir\, where four expert players from different backgrounds merge to explore the guitar’s infinite universe of sound. \nThe orchestral concept is not so much about soloists and accompaniment\, rather a group mind where the collective is prized and beauty emerges from surprise and empathy. The idea has grown from Harrison’s work at the yearly Alternative Guitar Summit Camp where master players often group together by chance with spectacular results. The repertoire includes Harrison’s compositions as well as tunes from anywhere. \nSteve Cardenas is best known for his work with Charlie Haden\, Steve Swallow\, and Paul Motian. Max Light is considered one of the leading younger improvisers with influences from modern bop to Allan Holdsworth. He placed 2nd in the 2019 Herbie Hancock Guitar Competition. Gregg Belisle-Chi gained notoriety for releasing an astonishing solo record of avant saxophonist Tim Berne’s improvisations. He leads his own quartet exploring the outer reaches of jazz and rock and much else. Guitarist\, composer\, arranger\, lyricist\, writer\, educator\, and vocalist Joel Harrison has “created a new blueprint for jazz” (New Orleans Times-Picayune). Succinctly described by the New York Times as “protean… brilliant\,” he is the founder and director of the Alternative Guitar Summit\, a yearly festival and camp devoted to new and unusual guitar music. \nThe Ted Nash Trio is a jazz trio led by Grammy‑winning saxophonist and composer Ted Nash\, best known for his work with Jazz at Lincoln Center. The core lineup features Ted Nash on saxophones and clarinet\, guitarist Steve Cardenas\, and bassist Ben Allison; together they play intimate\, drummer‑less trio music that emphasizes close interaction\, space\, and melody\, often drawing inspiration from the classic Jimmy Giuffre trios and from projects like their Somewhere Else: West Side Story Songs album.

SUMMARY:Garrison Keillor
DESCRIPTION:Loyal fans and those new to his audience will be entertained by Garrison Keillor’s quintessential humor\, music\, poetry\, and anecdotes\, delivered in his classic baritone voice.  The thread that runs throughout the evening is the beauty of growing old. Garrison has found graceful acceptance and genuine joy in life’s sunset\, bringing celebration to the inevitable journey. \n“Life is unjust and this is what makes it so beautiful. Every day is a gift. Be brave and take hold of it.” \nWith cheerfulness and wit\, the natural storyteller reflects on decades of life and art. The familiar\, decent characters of Lake Wobegon are woven into the evening\, along with a limerick or two and communal singalongs to lift the spirits. \n“We are the last generation who knows all the words\,” says Keillor. “When we’re gone\, they’ll disappear.” \nJoined by his longtime musical director\, Richard Dworsky\, this promises to be a warm\, thoughtful\, and thoroughly enjoyable evening.

SUMMARY:The Nude Party with Tobaccco City
DESCRIPTION:For The Nude Party\, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time\, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums\, an EP\, and played countless shows. Prior to the pandemic\, the band was really starting to hit its stride. They had a system in place and were spreading their brand of melodic rock to the masses. They could count Jack White\, Arctic Monkeys\, and Orville Peck as vocal supporters\, which led to support slots for each. Soon\, incredible live appearances at Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, Newport Folk Festival\, and Shaky Knees became the norm. \nOver the course of the last two years\, The Nude Party personally produced their new album\, Rides On. With the help of Matthew Horner\, they claim to have had as much fun creating than any other point in their career. The new album\, which includes 14 songs that dabble in electro-pop and stripped-down country\, provided them with an opportunity to collaborate and coalesce. \nThey’re excited to begin the next chapter of their career.  At a time when it would have been easy to pack it in\, the band continues to persevere.

SUMMARY:Conan (UK Caveman Battle Doom Pioneers)
DESCRIPTION:Conan’s doom is singular. Carved of granite. Yes\, of course there’ve been changes since guitarist/vocalist Jon Davis founded the group in 2006\, but the intention at the time toward superlative heavy – tonal extremity wrought with impressionist lyrics stripping ideas to the core where sometimes the whole line is just one word; they’ve always called it “Caveman Battle Doom” – remains at the root of everything they’ve done since. And across five studio records in the decade from 2012-2022\, Conan have set the standard by which much of “heavy” anything is judged. And in comparison\, most is found wanting. \nBut for every time you’ve heard about Conan’s music being like galloping steeds or frost-covered sharp-peaked mountains\, etc.\, imagery of largesse and violence\, the truth is Conan are an exercise in frequency. It’s the low resonance that shakes your chest\, the depth of the bass – now handled by David Ryley (ex-Fudge Tunnel) – the push of air from Johnny King’s kick drum\, or the way the dark-fuzz distortion of Davis’ guitar is offset by shouting vocals cutting through that sometimes punishing onslaught\, rarely to offer comfort so much as add viciousness to the crash\, plod and pillage.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Stack
DESCRIPTION:After thriving as a sideman musician in the New York City music scene for several years\, songwriter\, guitarist and vocalist Andy Stack heeded that call and headed north on a whim to the Hudson Valley (home to luminaries like Bob Dylan and The Band) and founded the group Buffalo Stack and the music production co. Buffalo Stack Productions. \n\nAndy brings to Buffalo Stack his command of American roots music\, his knowledge of the folk traditions from his ancestors’ homeland of Ireland and his modern music sensibilities. Influences from Chicago\, to the Delta\, from New Orleans to New York City\, all find their way into the cocktail.  He culls the deep cuts for material\, improvises solos with a compelling approach to his instrument\, and leads the band through a dynamic and adventurous set of original songs and carefully selected covers. The band in its versatility has performed in different formations from duo to big band with a horn section and background singers\, consistently bringing enthusiastic audiences to their feet.  Andy is also in high demand as a sideman\, recently lending his talents to Girl From the North Country (Bob Dylan) on Broadway\, Yola (Grammy nominated artist) and the Cosmic Orchestra\, backing national acts monthly.
