SUMMARY:Tom Chapin & Friends with The Chapin Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Tom Chapin & Friends with The Chapin Sisters \nIn the long rich history of Family Groups in American Roots Music\, the Chapin Family has a special place. When this family of performers comes together\, magic happens. This concert features original and traditional songs\, as well as classic story songs by the late\, great Harry Chapin.\nTom Chapin’s career spans five decades\, 26 albums and three Grammy Awards. Tom accompanies himself on guitar\, banjo and autoharp; his 2 band members sing and play multiple instruments (keyboard\, accordion\, bass\, pennywhistle and concertina). \nLily and Abigail Chapin are singing\, songwriting sisters known for pristine harmonies and haunting melodies. They’ve been compared to sister-acts of old and Appalachian family groups\, yet their original songs and arrangements have a contemporary feel.

SUMMARY:Pretend till it Hurts – Matthew Gilbert – Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:In “Pretend till it Hurts”\, Matthew Gilbert presents a series of sculptures and textile drawings that depict fatal stories with a dark sense of humor. \nBlending cartoon logic with gothic imagery\, Gilbert projects themes of abandonment onto crumbling architecture. The plush materials and whimsical details soften the otherwise catastrophic subject matter\, adding theatrical melodrama that is both sincere and deprecating.

SUMMARY:The Egyptian Helen
DESCRIPTION:July 24 – August 2 \nA hypnotic blend of myth\, melodrama\, and psychological intrigue\, Richard Strauss’s seldom heard The Egyptian Helen (Die ägyptische Helena) receives a lavish\, rare U.S. staging at Bard SummerScape. \nStrauss and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal reimagine the Helen myth\, set in the aftermath of the Trojan War\, as a tale of doubling: a phantom Helen returns to Troy\, while the real\, faithful Helen has been spirited away from harm. The vengeful husband\, Menelaus\, surrenders to love; the unfaithful Helen renews her devotion. The opera unfolds as a rich exploration of the complexities and contradictions of love\, sexuality\, and marriage. \nNew Production \n\nMusic by Richard Strauss\nLibretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal\nDirected by Christian Räth\nAmerican Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leon Botstein \nSung in German with English supertitles \n\n\nDates \nJuly 24 at 6:30 pm \nJuly 26 at 2:00 pm \nJuly 29 at 2:00 pm \nJuly 31 at 4:00 pm \nAugust 2 at 2:00 pm

SUMMARY:The Blues Project
DESCRIPTION:The Blues Project \nLive 2025\, the new album from The Blues Project\, shows the acclaimed and influential band hasn’t slowed down at all after 60 years. If anything\, they’ve gained a step and expanded their already broad musical template. Currently led by co-founding member and original drummer Roy Blumenfeld\, this incarnation of the quintet is even funkier than before\, adding NOLA vibes to their already diverse groove. \nThe 13-song set on Live shows what made them the first jamband\, as they color outside the lines and then bring it back time after time. “We were trailblazers in 1965\, years before the term jamband even existed. Working outside the box was very appealing\, it influenced a lot of musicians to open things up.” The album revisits classics from their back catalog\, along with new originals destined to take their rightful place as new classics in the band’s canon. \n“I think the band now has more of an R&B edge\,” Blumenfeld notes. “We’re more rhythm- driven\, a bit more funky\, there’s some zydeco in there now too; it’s a pretty big sound but you can still hear everything that’s going on\, we don’t step on top of each other. The original band took inspiration from classical\, jazz\, tin pan alley\, blues and folk. That was the soup we cooked up to create a very original and eclectic sound. I wanted to maintain that eclectic aspect with this lineup\, and now we have a bit more of a funkier point of view. We’ve added some spice and some heat\, and turned that original stew into more of a gumbo.” \n“We will always be a band who attempt to think out of the box\, but what is the box anymore? Everything is so accessible and available that the box has become one of those hundred-sided inflatable origami spheres. It’s about live music and creating that live space where we flourish.” Even though that panoply of styles is in the forefront\, it really always does come back to the blues. The Blues Project set the table in 1965\, and with Live 2025 they’re back to reclaim their seat.

SUMMARY:Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams
DESCRIPTION:Love always. Love forever. Love until the end of time. The Great Cosmic Playlist is testimony to the endurance of an emotion that is easy to conjure but hard to maintain. But for Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams\, who have been consciously coupled since 1986\, love is more than a pop song; they are the bards of long-term commitment. All This Time is the couple’s fourth album since taking that leap\, and it’s an intensely romantic one. Playing with them at Maverick Friday Nights are Andy Stack on vocals and bass\, and Justin Guip on drums and percussion. Reserved Hall Seats: $65/40\, $30/27 (partial obstruction) General Admission/Outdoors/Uncovered: $25\, Students: $10.

SUMMARY:Long Light: Live Music at Art Omi with Stroma & Gary
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 25th for our third Long Light concert of the season with live music in the Sculpture & Architecture Park featuring Stroma and GARY. Doors open at 5 PM | Music 6-8 pm. Bites by Chatham Provisions\, and beer\, wine\, and mocktails for sale in the Art Omi Cafe. All ages\, rain or shine. Free entry. RSVP encouraged. \nStroma is a three-piece band operating somewhere between shoegaze\, noise rock\, and experimental alternative music. Their songs drift through walls of feedback\, hypnotic repetition\, jagged rhythms\, and sudden moments of clarity— creating music that feels both confrontational and deeply reflective. \nGARY is the musical collaboration of vocalist/guitarist Skyler Smith and guitarist Sam Wheeler. Formed in late 2024\, the music mixes broad musical influences that range across decades from Bowie and The Stooges to early Flaming Lips\, Built To Spill and Smog. GARY wraps confidently intimate vocals with textural guitars and cinematic tension\, balancing moments of dreamy melancholy with accents of explosive energy.

SUMMARY:An Evening of American Art Song - In Memory of Robert Manno
DESCRIPTION:The sudden passing just last month of Robert Manno gives us the saddest of opportunities\, to make a long-planned performance of one of his finest works of vocal chamber-music now the centerpiece of a concert in his memory. His deeply evocative song-cycle — a setting of the work of one of our most renowned poets — is at the very heart of an evening devoted to the glorious tradition of 20th-century American art song. Brian Zeger\, longtime Artistic Director of Vocal Arts at the Juilliard School\, partners with two of America’s finest young singers for a rare Maverick evening of song in the classical style. \nWidely recognized as one of the leading collaborative pianists of the day\, Brian Zeger has performed with many of the world’s greatest singers including Marilyn Horne\, Deborah Voigt\, Anna Netrebko\, Susan Graham\, René Pape\, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa\, Frederica von Stade\, Piotr Beczala\, Bryn Terfel\, Joyce DiDonato\, Denyce Graves\, and Adrianne Pieczonka in an extensive concert career that has taken him to the premiere concert halls throughout the United States and abroad.

SUMMARY:George Porter\, Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners
DESCRIPTION:George Porter Jr. is an award-winning bassist\, songwriter and vocalist. He is a founding member of New Orleans’ seminal funk band\, The Meters\, and widely recognized as one of the greatest bass players of all time. Formed alongside Art “Poppa Funk” Neville\, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste\, the pioneering R&B funk outfit hit the scene on the streets of the Crescent City in the 1960s\, to ultimately become one of the progenitors of the funk music genre. The groundbreaking collective carved out syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans’ deep African musical roots. \nPorter’s heavy pocket and fat notes formed the rubbery bass lines behind funk classics like their signature “Cissy Strut\,” the now classic 1969 funk instrumental released as a single from their eponymous debut album\, which reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100\, respectively. While the group rarely enjoyed massive mainstream success\, they are widely heralded alongside James Brown\, Sly Stone\, and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic as the founding fathers of funk. The Meters have been nominated four times for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (most recently in 2017) and were presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018. \nAt the outset of his young career\, Porter developed his signature style on sessions in his hometown New Orleans\, with early musical pioneers Johnny Adams\, Irma Thomas\, Snooks Eaglin\, Eddie Bo and The Lastie Brothers. While Porter developed his pedigree\, The Meters were gaining notoriety\, soon becoming the house band for Allen Toussaint’s recording label\, backing classic records from Dr. John\, Lee Dorsey and Earl King\, while later supplying the musical foundation for classic hit albums and singles from modern artists Robert Palmer\, Paul McCartney\, Tori Amos\, Taj Mahal\, not to mention Patti Labelle’s No. 1 R&B hit “Lady Marmalade.” George and The Meters toured with the Rolling Stones in ’75\, were embraced by Led Zeppelin and The Beatles\, and became primary influences to modern artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys. Porter’s rhythmic work with drummer Modeliste also became the building block behind primary samples used by the most relevant hip-hop artists of the 1980’s and 1990’s\, including A Tribe Called Quest\, Run DMC\, N.W.A. and Queen Latifah. Porter has accompanied the stage as a band member or special guest with the likes of David Byrne\, Dead & Company\, Jimmy Buffet\, Warren Haynes\, Widespread Panic\, Tedeschi Trucks Band\, John Scofield\, Bill Kreutzmann\, Mickey Hart and various members of Phish\, to name a few. \nFor more information\, visit georgeporterjr.com

SUMMARY:Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
DESCRIPTION:Ted Leo and the Pharmacists with Cult Objects\nTed Leo is one of the finest songwriters of our generation\, even if it’s not entirely clear what generation that is. Starting in New York Hardcore with Citizen’s Arrest\, making the ‘90s safe for power-pop and Weller-esque hair with Chisel\, then singing our turbulent lives like we were smarter than we were with The Pharmacists\, and most recently providing equal parts sweetness and solace with Aimee Mann as The Both\, Ted never let us down. And now\, seven years after The Brutalist Bricks\, he has a new solo album. And it’s wonderful. \nThe songs on The Hanged Man\, recorded at a home-studio-in-transition in Wakefield\, RI\, with Ted playing almost all the instruments\, are some of the finest and most finely wrought of Ted Leo’s career. Ted describes the time working on the album as one of “personal desolation that felt fallow but was actually very fertile” and\, indeed\, lyrically\, The Hanged Man is suffused with hope of sorts but crushingly heavy. The concerns addressed\, whether personal trauma or the national disaster we’re all currently existing in\, matched with the range and vitality of the songcraft is inspiring\, even uplifting. \nThe Hanged Man offers the sharp bursts of skinny tie pop-punk fury one would expect from Ted—and even these feel streamlined like never before—but they are offset with an adventurousness in both tone and structure. The intention was to upend expectations but\, on songs like the bookends of “Moon Out of Phase” and “Let’s Stay On The Moon\,” the intention never gets in the way of the result. There’s no strain of effort in songs that are unlike anything Ted has done previously. The Hanged Man is a career high\, born through industry soul sickness\, nausea-inducing crisis\, and a talent that feels like secular grace.

SUMMARY:Ken Wenger: The Space Between Seeing and Feeling
DESCRIPTION:The Space Between Seeing and Feeling. For over four decades\, Ken Wenger has observed how people interpret information. He notes that “seeing” the news often means consuming it through the eyes — reading headlines\, watching images\, or hearing reports — while “feeling” the news involves an emotional\, visceral connection to the content. This distinction is central to his rhetorical work\, where he examines how perception shapes understanding and response.
