SUMMARY:James Cox Gallery - Spring Auction
DESCRIPTION:Woodstock art plays a starring role in James Cox Gallery’s upcoming Spring Auction\, featuring an especially extensive array of paintings and works on paper by members of its historic “Colony of the Arts”. \nThe auction will feature a large consignment from the estate of Paul DeLisio (1941-2026)\, encompassing works by many Woodstock masters\, including John Fenton (1912-1977)\, Fletcher Martin (1904-1979)\, Georgina Klitgaard (1893-1976)’ Emil Ganso (1895-1941)\, Ethel Magafan (1916-1993) and Arnold (1896-1968) and Lucile Blanch (1895-1981). \nOther James Cox favorites include a delightful serigraph called “Dance Party” by Austin Mecklem (1890-1951) and a beautiful pastel of two children playing on a beach by Clayton Buchanan (20th Century) titled “The Red Trunks”. Also of note from the Delisio collection is a photogravure by Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) titled “In the New York Central Yards”\, which appeared in a 1907 edition of Camera Work Magazine. \nUnique selections from the estates of two of Woodstock’s most prominent women artists\, Doris Lee (1905-1983) and Zulma Steele (1881-1979)\, will also be offered. Five small works on paper by Lee come directly from the artist’s estate. “These gems are handsomely framed and so charming”\, Cox observed. One\, “Catching Butterflies”\, features two preliminary sketches for a painting by the same title that recently fetched the highest price paid at auction for a Doris Lee. Another in this group is a preliminary sketch for a Better Homes and Gardens Magazine cover that includes a handwritten note by the artist. \nPreview Options\nThe public is invited preview the auction from 10am to 5pm on Monday\, June 1 through June 7\, and at a preview party Friday June 5 from 5pm to 8pm at the Gallery.
