Join us for an evening hike to the Overlook Mountain Fire Tower, led by Executive Director and NYS Licensed Guide Jeff Senterman. This scenic trek offers sweeping views of the Devil’s Path, Kaaterskill High Peak, and the Hudson River Valley timed to enjoy the transition from sunset to moonrise.
Date: Friday, August 28th
Time: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Location: (Parking details will be shared once registration is complete)
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: Approximately 5 Miles Round Trip
Elevation Gain: Approximately 1,400 ft
The hike follows a historic carriage road that climbs steadily for the first two miles to the site of a former mountaintop hotel, where we’ll pause to explore the ruins.
From there, a half-mile footpath leads to the fire tower and summit. While timber rattlesnakes inhabit the area, encounters are unlikely, and guides will share tips for hiking safely and respectfully.
At the summit, enjoy sweeping views from the fire tower before heading to a nearby viewpoint to watch the moon rise over the Hudson Valley. The return hike will be a steady descent back to the trailhead, with brief pauses as needed.
Please arrive prepared with a headlamp and extra batteries, non-cotton layers, sturdy footwear, and enough water and snacks.
*If you do not have a headlamp, you will not be allowed to take part in this hike.
Please note: To help ensure the safety of all participants and provide the best possible experience for the group, dogs are not permitted on Catskill Center guided hikes. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to hiking with you!
Advance registration is required, with a $10 suggested donation. Registration closes 24 hours before event.
