48 Hours in Phoenicia: Creekside Cabins, Mountain Magic & Small-Town Charm

By Sophie Knight | August 21, 2026

Cradled between the Catskill peaks and the rushing Esopus Creek, Phoenicia has been welcoming mountain travelers for well over a century. Once a bustling railroad town and gateway to the Catskills’ grand resorts, today it has traded steam engines for hiking boots, fishing rods, art galleries, and long afternoons spent wandering one of the region’s most charming Main Streets. Phoenicia has always been a mountain town first.

Hikers, anglers, artists, and generations of weekenders have come here for one simple reason: to slow down. Life revolves around the river, the trails, the local shops, and the kind of neighbors who still know one another by name. It’s a place where you can spend the morning pedaling historic railroad tracks, the afternoon dipping your feet into an icy mountain creek, and the evening gathered around a fire pit beneath the pines.

The perfect place to experience it all? The Phoenicia Lodge.

WHERE TO STAY: PHOENICIA LODGE

Entrances to multiple cabins at Phoenicia Lodge in the Catskills.

There’s something instantly comforting about pulling into Phoenicia Lodge. Lofty pines shade the property, where cheerful red cabins peek from beneath the trees, Adirondack chairs circle crackling fire pits, and hammocks sway in the mountain breeze. It evokes the nostalgia of the family summer vacations many of us grew up with—but with considered design, plush beds, and all the comforts of a boutique hotel. If Twin Gables is Woodstock’s colorful, artistic soul, Phoenicia Lodge is its mountain-loving sister. Another property in Azie and Travis Shelhorse’s Verdigreen collection, the lodge reflects the same philosophy: preserve what makes a place special while quietly elevating every detail. Here, that means honoring the property’s Catskills roots while creating a retreat that feels simultaneously relaxed and effortlessly stylish.

Step inside the Great Room and you’ll immediately understand its charm. A vintage paint-by-number portrait of the lodge hangs by the welcome desk, quietly celebrating the property’s history. Nearby, a grab-and-go fridge is stocked with local snacks, drinks, and DIY s’mores kits, while shelves lined with board games, books, puzzles, blankets, and complimentary walking sticks encourage guests to settle in rather than hurry out the door. Rather than erase the past, designer Azie Shelhorse has elevated it.

Original stone fireplaces, warm wood beams, and mountain character remain. At the same time, refreshed guest rooms layer crisp linens, custom artwork, rich textures, and playful touches that feel distinctly Catskills without ever becoming cliché. Accommodations range from stylish inn rooms to spacious suites and private one- and two-bedroom cabins, making the lodge equally appealing for couples seeking a quiet mountain escape, families reconnecting over a long weekend, or friends gathering for hiking, skiing, and summer adventures.

Outside, the property becomes an extension of your room. Families gather around community grills, children play lawn games beneath the pines, and while dusk settles over the mountains, guests naturally drift toward the fire pits with a glass of wine in hand. At Phoenicia Lodge, the greatest luxury isn’t found in an over-the-top amenity. It’s the feeling that, almost from the moment you arrive, you’ve remembered how to slow down.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: THE SCENIC ROUTE

Don’t rush straight to the lodge. Part of the fun is the drive along Route 28. Before checking in, stop at Fabulous Furniture, where artist Steve Heller has spent more than fifty years transforming reclaimed wood, salvaged metal, and found objects into extraordinary works of functional art. His sprawling property is part gallery, part workshop, and part roadside attraction, where giant spacecraft and robots, handcrafted furniture, vintage automobiles, and even a homemade rocket greet visitors before they ever step inside. If Steve happens to be in the workshop, don’t be surprised if he invites you in. Wander through rooms filled with one-of-a-kind tables, mirrors, sculptures, and whimsical creations that blur the line between furniture and fine art. It’s impossible to leave without smiling—and very difficult to leave empty-handed.Robots, aliens and spacecraft at Steve Heller Fabulous Furniture & Sculptures

Just down the road, Fruition Chocolate Works offers a completely different kind of artistry. The aroma of roasting cacao greets you before you even walk through the door. Watch chocolatiers transform ethically sourced beans into award-winning chocolate bars and exquisite bonbons, then pick out a small box for later. Trust us—you’ll be grateful when you’re gathered around the fire pit after dinner. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Phoenicia Lodge just in time to pour a drink on your porch, breathe in the mountain air, and officially begin the weekend.Fruition Chocolate Works in Shokan NY.

FRIDAY EVENING: DINNER AT PEEKAMOOSE

For your first dinner, head ten minutes west to Peekamoose Restaurant.

Set inside a rambling farmhouse, Peekamoose was championing farm-to-table cooking in the Catskills long before the phrase became ubiquitous. Owners Marybeth and Devin Mills built the restaurant around local farms, seasonal ingredients, and the kind of warm, unstudied hospitality that makes you want to settle in for the evening. The food is beautifully prepared but not fussy, the wine list is excellent, and the atmosphere feels special without losing its neighborhood soul.

After dinner, head back to Phoenicia Lodge. Light the fire pit, open a bottle of wine, and settle into an Adirondack chair beneath the pines. Listen to the crickets and the quiet of the mountains around you.

Tomorrow can wait.

SATURDAY MORNING: BREAKFAST AT PHONECIA DINER

No Catskills weekend feels complete without breakfast at Phoenicia Diner.

The line often starts before the coffee has finished brewing—and for good reason. Housed inside a beautifully restored 1962 diner, the  Phoenicia Diner welcomes locals, hikers, weekenders, anglers, and even film crews—most recently those behind Severance. The menu celebrates Catskills farms with seasonal ingredients woven into everything from fluffy pancakes and perfectly crisp hash browns to inventive omelets and hearty breakfast sandwiches.

Grab a booth, order an extra pastry for later, and linger over one more cup of coffee. You’re officially on Catskills time now.

SATURDAY MID-MORNING: RIDE THE RAILS

Just minutes from the diner, one of the Catskills’ most unique adventures awaits. Hop aboard Rail Explorers’ electric-assist rail bikes and pedal along the historic Ulster & Delaware Railroad, winding through towering forests, alongside the Esopus Creek, and into scenery that feels untouched by time. The ride is leisurely enough for families, fun enough for groups, and romantic enough for couples looking for a different kind of date.

The best part? You don’t have to be an athlete. The electric assist does much of the work, leaving you free to soak in the mountain views and enjoy the journey.

Prefer something quieter? Skip the rails and pick up sandwiches from Bread Alone in nearby Boiceville before heading to the Ashokan Rail Trail. Spread out a blanket beside the reservoir, watch the fly fishing, and spend the afternoon with nothing more pressing than deciding which cookie to eat first.

SATURDAY EARLY AFTERNOON: WANDER DOWN MAIN STREET

After your morning adventure, head back into the heart of Phoenicia, where the tempo slows even further. Get a midday boost with an espresso or iced latte at Bettina Café & Market before wandering Main Street at no particular pace. Phoenicia isn’t a town that rewards checking attractions off a list. It rewards curiosity.

Lose yourself in Mystery Spot Antiques, where vintage records, well-loved books, antiques, and curious collectibles spill from one room into the next. Their tagline says it best: The Catskills’ shrine to clutter in Phoenicia, NY.

Just down the street, The Nest Egg has been delighting generations of visitors with old-fashioned Catskills charm. Part country store, part gift shop, it’s stocked with hiking maps, maple syrup, nostalgic candy, handcrafted soaps, puzzles, locally made treasures—and yes, the store’s famously friendly black bear standing watch in the back. Don’t leave without a piece of homemade fudge. It’s practically a Phoenicia tradition.

Art lovers should make time for VARGA Gallery, where artist Christina Varga’s vibrant mixed-media works celebrate the Catskills’ creative spirit. The gallery has become one of the village’s cultural anchors, showcasing contemporary art while helping fuel Phoenicia’s thriving creative community. And be sure to stop by Tender Land Home for your gifting needs, from fragrant soaps and candles to artisan jewelry, pottery, pillows and more.

BEFORE DINNER: HEAD DOWN TO THE ESOPUS CREEK

One of Phoenicia Lodge’s loveliest surprises is just a short stroll away. A wooden bridge spans the Esopus Creek, offering postcard-worthy views of the rushing water and surrounding mountains. Follow the path down to the rocky shoreline, roll up your pant legs, and let the icy creek swirl around your feet. It’s one of those wonderfully simple Catskills rituals that somehow becomes one of the moments you remember most.

SATURDAY EVENING: COZY CATSKILLS DINING

After a day spent exploring, keep dinner easy. For pizza and a local craft beer, head to Brio’s, a Phoenicia favorite that’s been welcoming locals and visitors for decades. Their thin-crust pizzas, local drafts, and easygoing atmosphere make it the perfect post-adventure dinner.

Or head a few minutes down the road to Oliver’s in Mount Tremper. Housed inside the beautifully restored Howland House at the historic Four Corners, Oliver’s reimagines the neighborhood pub with savory handmade pies, house-made pastas and sausages, and bright seasonal dishes served in a warm, British-inspired setting. Grab a table in the cozy dining room or linger outside on a summer evening—it’s the kind of place you’ll wish existed in your own neighborhood.

Finish the evening exactly where it began: back beneath the pines at Phoenicia Lodge, gathered around the fire pit with another Fruition bonbon and a sky full of stars.

SUNDAY MORNING: ONE LAST TASTE OF PHOENICIA

If your visit stretches into Sunday, save a little room in the car. The Phoenicia Farmers Market transforms Parish Field into one of the Catskills’ most beloved weekly gatherings. Farmers, bakers, cheesemakers, flower growers, artisans, and musicians come together each Sunday morning, creating the kind of market that feels as much like a neighborhood celebration as a shopping trip.

Fill a market tote with just-picked vegetables, artisan bread, maple syrup, local cheeses, fresh flowers, handmade soaps, and small-batch pantry staples—plus one last pastry for the drive home.

As you pull back onto Route 28, you’ll realize Phoenicia has worked its gentle magic. Weekends here aren’t about rushing from one attraction to the next. They’re about slower mornings, mountain air, conversations around the fire pit, and afternoons enjoying nowhere particular to be. Like most people who spend time here, you’ll probably find yourself planning your return somewhere around the first bend in the road.
