CANCER ENERGY REPORT: Creating emotional freedom

Each energy season touches each of us in a unique area of our lives. Each of us has the energy of Cancer somewhere in our personal astrology. This Energy Report looks at the collective themes that will mark this period, which we all integrate on one level or another. If you are interested in learning more about your own astrology, book a one-on-one session. If you are familiar with your astrology already, look at your birth chart to tell you which planets and houses will be ignited by Cancer Season.

The name for this zodiac sign, Cancer, is derived from the Latin word for crab. In our day and age, due to the disconnect between humans and their emotional natures, Cancer energy can get a bad rap. Not all emotions we meet are of the happy variety, it’s actually good to be crabby sometimes! Cancer is a water sign, and it is highly attuned to what we understand as “feelings.” I’ve heard its shadow explained as gloomy, clingy and depressed, although I personally don’t think this sign has any more penchant for sadness and co-dependence than any other sign, those are human experiences. Cancer is a leadership energy, highly intuitive + extremely creative – you should never underestimate the power of this sign. It can be a soft pillow to lay on, but just as easily it can be a fierce “mama bear” ready to protect at all costs! Cancer energy excels when it is allowed to move unconventionally, when it tunes into its true “home” and when it engages in sharing.

6/21 SUN ENTERS CANCER

Happy Birthday Cancer! And happy Summer Solstice. This is the season of experiencing and connecting with your vulnerability and of providing the necessary nurturing to soothe your soul. Here’s what we are not going to do this Cancer season: repress or judge our feelings. Make someone else responsible for our feelings. Be victimized by our feelings. Manipulate others with our feelings. What we are going to do is claim responsibility for our own healing, embodying that healer and working with others that can attune us more fully to the inner care that we need.

When the Sun is in Cancer, our collective vitality is boosted by caring for ourselves and one another. The old adage, put your own oxygen mask on, first applies here. We must first be centered on self, taking care of ourselves on a deeper level, before acting as caregivers to others. There are a few steps to this season. First, we need to make sure that we are protecting ourselves and creating a safe container, whether in our relationships or in our physical home life. Second, we need to open ourselves to what is going on inside. Third, we need to express our raw emotional energies. This could be done through journaling, music, art, therapy or counseling – or simply having a good cry. Which many of us may have already been doing with all these Pluto shifts!

This season is extremely important for our physical health. Our emotional landscapes directly relate to the level of inner stress and inflammation our bodies are under. Stress and inflammation are the leading causes of maladies in the body. If you find yourself feeling unwell, your emotional self also needs nursing, not only the physical body. When we allow ourselves to let the tears fall, to feel our grief and to move through it physically, we also drop the barriers we have inadvertently created to our joy. Give yourself permission to feel. Feelings, the good, the bad and even the ugly truly do help to give our life meaning.

6/26 MERCURY ENTERS CANCER

When Mercury (Intellect, Mind, Communication) is in Cancer we seem more apt to look upon the past. Hopefully, we can also imbue the qualities of forgiveness and compassion into those spaces, especially towards the self. Forgive yourself for not knowing what you thought you should know. Use the past as a way to create new solutions for the future, not as a way to guilt or shame yourself or others. What’s done is done and we can make different choices next time with the wisdom our experiences have given us. There are many positives when Mercury in Cancer is expressed properly, communication can be softer and more loving. We can become active listeners, too. We must take care not to weaponize our feelings in our words, but use this opportunity to take all our relationships, even the ones we have with ourselves, to a deeper level by really expressing what’s going on emotionally.

6/30 NEPTUNE IN PISCES RETROGRADE

Neptune has been in Pisces since 2011, and will leave in 2026. It spends about five months each year retrograding, pretty normal for most of the outer planets. Neptune is known as the great ego dissolver. A healthy ego is something that is necessary, we should know we are human and understand the limitations of that experience. If we had no ego we would just be singing with the faeries all day, a nice idea but not very practical for Earth life. However, too much ego and we forget our spiritual life, which in turn can make our human life one of undue suffering. We have to find our own unique and personal balance between being of this world and being connected to something more profound. Pisces is all about unconditional love and oneness.

This is a time to review how you merge with the natural order of things, it’s about opening up to your intuitive guidance and the inner mystic that every human possesses. Spirituality is not religion, but it can be a facet of religion. Religion is made of man’s limited experience and opinion. Spirituality on the other hand is sometimes totally unexplainable and is unique to each person. Your spirituality is how YOU interpret the energy of life that courses through all things and hopefully how you revere it and respect it, along with working with it in ways that create beauty and love in this world. If you get lost in the fog, try cleaning up some of your behaviors. Drink less alcohol, consume less sugar and drink less coffee. A clear system can do wonders for a clear mind.

7/1 SUN CONJUNCT MERCURY BOTH IN CANCER

When two planets are conjunct they superpower one another and provide a point of learning to be aware of. This degree of Cancer is a deep one. It asks us to honor not only our living lives but to acknowledge and accept the transitions we all must make especially our physical death. This doesn’t mean we welcome death or pursue it. It means we must see where our fear of death can be a driving force for many painful behaviors and stressors in this life.

My grandfather recently died, and I traveled to England to be of support to my mother during the end-of-life process. In England, it is not common to view bodies. Generally, they are to be hidden away and there is almost a revulsion that people have about a body after death. I’m not trying to advocate for everyone looking at the dead, but I personally felt it would be disrespectful for me to treat someone’s earthly vessel like that. A body is not something to be repulsed by. However, it is something to come to terms with. As I looked upon my grandfather, I was able to attune to what life is within a body, and how the body shifts when life is no longer within it. Again, we don’t need to spend this transit looking for death, but we do need to see where we are afraid to make transitions, and how it is related to humanity’s innate fear of dying. The sad truth is that when we are afraid of death, life is simply spent not dying and not really living. In pursuit of safety, we can wall ourselves in, and miss out on the truly beautiful aspects of being alive. Today is a philosophical day, what adjustments can you make to truly live your life?

7/3 FULL MOON IN CAPRICORN

You won’t always be able to externally validate the intuitive experience. Sometimes it can take years to fully understand the reasons behind the feeling you had when you left a job, a home, or an experience. Your intuition is not rational and looking for external proof to validate your own gut or internal compass will get you stuck. Sometimes you have to just trust. You have to just get the message without everything being packaged into a neat little box that tells you the future. If I asked you, “What are you not getting the message about?” What comes to mind? It’s time to listen to the guidance that has been pushing you along. How do you use your material life to serve your creativity, feeling and being? How do you participate in building your own spiritual life into reality? Questions to ask ourselves today.

7/10 MARS ENTERS VIRGO + MERCURY ENTERS LEO

Just a quick stint in Cancer and then Mercury enters expressive Leo. What a wonderful time to sing, speak, write, act, or generally pursue anything artistic – share what your heart feels it’s called to share. As a native Mercury in Leo, I pride my (Leo) self  on my self-expression, whether through my podcast, this newsletter or my music. I got the gift of gab somehow and I suspect Mercury in Leo has something to do with it. However, the downside is that Leo can also get caught up in the drama. It can make a mountain out of a molehill mentally. So, we will have to check ourselves that we are not engaging in gossip, that we are not facilitating the drama in our lives and that we are not blowing things out of proportion.

Mars in Virgo is an excellent energy for working on what truly matters. It excels at paying attention to the details, organizing and rolling up our sleeves in service. This would be a great time to begin a new health kick, a big closet clean out or work on our administration. If there is something you haven’t felt you have the self-discipline for before now, try accomplishing it now. If you find yourself engaging in neurotic behaviors during this time, or excessive criticism, then you have too much of this energy and need to focus on the bigger picture as well as progress over perfection. Ask yourself, is this a health concern? Or am I needlessly worrying? Am I helping or am I nitpicking? Use this transit for accomplishment, but remember to listen to the rhythms of your body, sometimes service to your goals looks like resting.

7/17 NEW MOON CANCER 25

We end Cancer Season with the mooniest of moons. New Moons are a great time to plant seeds, set intentions or perform actions in relation to what you would like to grow or manifest over the upcoming cycle. The Moon exerts a gravitational pull on Earth, like taking a very deep breath and we can use this energetic pressure as a catalyst. By the end of the season, we are understanding more about how to show and accept vulnerability and we are probably feeling like staying home and cuddling our loved ones through this transit! This is a great time to:

  • Dare to be honest about what you are feeling, and surrender to those emotions physically
  • Create better boundaries for yourself
  • Find family harmony and balance even if that means removing yourself from painful dynamics, bringing more acceptance to what is
  • Share your heart with someone you trust
  • Tune into what ‘Mother’ means to you and how you can better embody the qualities of mother that you need for soothing

Preparing for Venus in Leo Retrograde

Venus retrogrades every two years or so and unlike the outer planets, the personal planets (ones closer to Earth) can definitely feel more disruptive which is why I’m giving a little advanced notice on this one. We are in what is called the shadow period now, so we are already feeling the effects. It’s not uncommon for relationships to end or come back together during this period and relationships have sometimes begun to have a short shelf life. This is not to say, don’t live your life though but be aware – we are all under review about how we give and receive love. Venus in Leo will not settle for less than being cherished. There is a big change coming for all of us in opening our hearts as we have already felt the murmurs of this all month long. The love and compassion we have for ourselves are at the root of any issues we may see externally manifested. Have the courage to really love yourself, to be your own biggest champion and cheerleader. Venus in Leo RX will help us get there.
