James Cox Gallery at Woodstock Announces Online-Only Auction Sunday June 9th!

The excitement is building for the James Cox Gallery online auction. After thirty-four years in one of the country’s most famous art towns, Woodstock, NY, James Cox Gallery auctions are noted for an eclectic array of outstanding offerings. The gallerist emphasized, “This one is no exception.” 200 examples by many American and internationally famous artists will be featured, including: Brice Marden, Felrath Hines, Bill Reid, Rolph Scarlett, and many more!

Hudson Valley artists, particularly those from the historic Woodstock Colony of the Arts, will be prominently featured in an online-only auction slated for Sunday, June 9th. The sale begins promptly at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 9th. items.

“It  will be an exciting day for collectors and faithful followers worldwide,” said James Cox.

According to Cox, the most important piece in the June 9th sale is a painting by prominent minimalist artist Brice Marden (1938-2023). Titled simply “Painting,” the 24” x 32” early 1960s oil on canvas is typical of Marden’s work from this period, rendered in a subtle palette of muted greys.

Another important piece in the auction, “Killer Whale Spirit,” is a cast bronze by Bill Reid (1920-1963), a famous Canadian sculptor and member of the Haida tribe of First Nations. Also of note is a 1961 oil painting by celebrated African American artist Felrath Hines (1918-1993).

The gallery selected several works from artist estates it represents for the upcoming sale. Among this group are four pieces by self-taught Russian-born artist Joseph Garlock (1884-1980), three paintings by mid-century artist Elaine Wesley (1923-2007), and five pieces by Konrad Cramer (1888-1963).

“Our estate artists always attract enthusiastic bidders,” Cox noted.

A stunning pastel by Richard Segalman (1934-2021) highlights the Woodstock art group. According to James Cox, “White Dress,” which features a woman wearing a flowing gown and gazing serenely out the window, is a classic Segalman composition. “The Hog Pen” by Petra Cabot (1907-2006) is a fine example of this Woodstock artist’s whimsical paintings. It depicts a sow contentedly surrounded by her piglets in a charming farm setting. Another popular Woodstock artist featured in the sale is Roph Scarlett (1884-1984). In addition to several abstract works on paper, four pieces of Scarlett’s handcrafted sterling silver jewelry, all studded with semi-precious stones, will be for sale.

Contemporary Woodstock artists are also well represented. Especially striking among this group are two works by nationally renowned artist Mary Frank. Two large pieces feature elegant herons, one an ink on paper and the other a pastel.

Additional pieces by living Woodstock artists include “Fire Dancer,” a vibrant acrylic by Bobby Blizer; “Neighborhood at Dusk,” a subtle watercolor by Staats Fasholdt; “Spring Afternoon at the Met,” an oil by Mary Anna Goetz featuring the museum’s information booth festooned with a huge bouquet.

“And, of course, there is the Taylor Swift cocktail dress,” Cox quipped.

The gallery is excited about a new “Pop Culture” section added to the spring sale. According to Cox, the main attraction in this category is a dress worn by superstar Taylor Swift when she posed for the cover of the November 2012 edition of UK Bliss Magazine. The portrait collar cocktail dress was designed by Rafael Cennamo.

In addition to high-quality paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, the sale will also include Native American pottery, porcelain ceramics and figurines, an antique Indonesian wood panel, a 19th-century needlework sampler, and a pair of Indonesian puppets.

Photography is well represented in this group, including three pieces by Elliott Landy, the official photographer for the iconic 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. A self-portrait by Graham Nash of Cosby, Stills and Nash fame, and his photo of Joni Mitchell in concert titled “Spotlight” are among the items offered in this new category. Original song lyrics by BobDylan, composed while living above the renowned Espresso Café in Woodstock during the 1960s, adds a rare offering to the Pop Culture selections. The lot is accompanied by a photo reproduction of Dylan working at his typewriter at the Café Expresso apartment.
