Why Tatana Kellner’s Inequity Is One of This Summer’s Must-See Exhibitions

By Inside+Out | July 10, 2026

Some exhibitions ask you to admire beautiful artwork. Others ask you to slow down, think deeply, and leave seeing the world a little differently. This summer, INEQUITY, a new solo exhibition by artist Tatana Kellner at The Sketchbook Gallery, does exactly that.

On view through August 1, 2026, the exhibition presents selections from Kellner’s ongoing series Apart—a body of work that confronts injustice, memory, resilience, and the fragile state of democracy through painting, drawing, collage, and printmaking. While deeply personal, the exhibition speaks to universal questions that feel especially urgent today.

Art That Responds to the World

Tatana Kellner’s work confronts difficult subjects with remarkable nuance, transforming personal history into layered visual explorations of injustice, memory, and resilience. Drawn from her ongoing series Apart, the works in Inequity examine the tension between individual lives and the larger political and social systems that shape them. Having emigrated from communist Czechoslovakia in 1969 and been raised by Holocaust survivors, Kellner approaches contemporary events from the perspective of both an insider and an outsider. That dual vantage point informs her response to the resurgence of authoritarianism and the human consequences of political conflict, while resisting propaganda or simplistic narratives. Instead, through painting, drawing, collage, and printmaking, she creates contemplative works that invite viewers to reflect on history’s echoes in the present and consider how art can serve as both witness and quiet resistance.

“My personal history has shaped me to inhabit a particular vantage point—an observer of society, neither fully belonging to the world I live in nor to the one I came from,” shares Tatana. “This dual perspective fuels my perception of global events, particularly the alarming resurgence of totalitarianism and its implications for us all.”

The Quiet Power of Resistance

Despite the weight of its subject matter, Inequity is not an exhibition about despair. Kellner believes that making art can itself become an act of resistance. Through expressive marks, layered collage, and intuitive compositions, she transforms feelings of helplessness into works that acknowledge hardship while leaving room for hope. Rather than offering simple answers, Inequity invites viewers to reflect on how history echoes into the present—and how individuals can respond with empathy, creativity, and courage. The result is work that rewards close looking, revealing new details and emotional depth with every viewing.
