An Afternoon Stroll in Catskill NY
INSIDE+OUT Upstate NY recently caught up with Real Estate Associate Broker Vicki Wolpert of Keller Williams Hudson Valley North to talk about some of her favorite local hot spots. A longtime Hudson Valley resident, Vicki loves to connect with the local community and keeps her finger on the pulse of what makes each city, town and hamlet so special.
Today, we shine a spotlight on the picturesque village of Catskill, New York, which sits on the banks of the majestic Hudson River.
Nestled in the heart of the Catskill Mountain Region, the town of Catskill buzzes with energy, inviting visitors to explore its locally owned shops and restaurants. Steeped in history, this district blends small-town charm with contemporary flair. From eclectic shops to cozy cafes, downtown Catskill is a hub of activity where this tight-knit community thrives. Visit the intimate Bridgestreet Theater for a great show, take a walk across the brand new Hudson River Skywalk, or tour the historic grounds of the Thomas Cole House and see rotating exhibitions of the Hudson River School of Art. The iconic Catskill architecture and inviting atmosphere make it a cherished destination for both locals and visitors throughout the seasons.
Vicki Wolpert: I recently spent the day in Catskill visiting some of my personal favorite places and why I love them.
L&M Studio | 462 Main Street | @landmstudio
In their storefront studio on Main Street in historic downtown Catskill, everything at L&M Studio is designed and made by owners Meg and Lucie. Both are New York State College of Ceramics graduates at Alfred University. Meg Oliver, a functional potter and Lucie Piedra, a sculptor, opened L&M studio in September 2011 to start a collaborative line of porcelain items, focusing on containers and houses for living things, designed with the specific needs of the inhabitants in mind. They design and make sleek, modern, handmade items for the home and garden.
J&J Smokehouse | 550 Main Street | @jjsmokehousebbqcatskill
J&J Smokehouse BBQ is inspired by the many barbecue places across America and takes the best of all to create a creation unique to Catskill, NY. All of their barbecue is a tasty blend of fresh herbs and spices, dried and hand rubbed, and then slow-smoked for several hours over a blend of Applewood and Hickory, producing bold, juicy, flavorful meats. Their passion is down-home cooking, where you recognize the food you’re eating, and as they share their experiences with each guest, we want you to feel like you are home and always welcome. Owners Jim and Jill are a long-standing part of Columbia and Greene Counties, and they love to share the values, tastes and flavors the Hudson Valley offers. I recommend it to all my clients– for a quick bite or catering!
Catskill Mountain Woodworking | C431 Main Street | @catskill_mountain_woodworking
From the beginning, Mike has locally sourced materials used for countless projects done for friends and family. Always admiring his passion and the uniqueness found in every piece, he’s been encouraged to share his designs with everyone, compelling Mike and Mary Jo to start Catskill Mountain Woodworking, located in Downtown Catskill. You can also find them at local craft shows, festivals and farmer’s markets boasting their handmade pieces. Mike makes everything from charcuterie boards to large furniture. They always host local vendors in their storefront, making it one of my favorite places to get one-of-a-kind closing gifts!
MadeXHudson Atelier | 391 Main Street | @madexhudson
Made X Hudson’s mission is to support independent designer brands, help reduce the waste evident in fast fashion, and provide career employment opportunities for local talent. They offer small brands a chance to produce their items to give clients an option to not fall into “fast fashion.” They focus on small minimums as a sustainable measure to avoid overproduction and work with domestic brands, often close to their factory, to avoid excess shipping. With their big emphasis on sustainability, they maximize fabric use, reduce waste and recycle scraps with trusted partners. Step out in one of Made X Hudson’s pieces. Whether it’s an original MxH creation, a timeless vintage find, or an eco-conscious upcycled gem, their curated collection ensures you stay fashionable. The unique touch of Made X Hudson offers not just a stylish piece but a statement of individuality.
Hemlock Catskill | 394 Main Street | @hemlockcatskill
Hemlock is a cocktail bar in the heart of Catskill. Adam Minegar, owner and operator, says, “I call it approachable elegance; it’s a rustic cocktail lounge with a quiet, friendly environment that appeals to locals and out-of-town guests. There’s nothing else like this around here.” Enjoy a unique, handmade cocktail (or mocktail)—each expertly crafted with premium spirits, fresh ingredients, and creative twists. Be sure to stop by and wet your whistle at the one and only Hemlock!
