Fresh Beats: Celebrating Bill Patrick and Seth Troxler’s Book “In Between”

If you’re passionate about electronic music and DJing or follow DJs looking for the ultimate dance party, don’t miss out on this Saturday’s “meet and greet” with photographer Bill Patrick at Kingston Social for the launch of his book, “In Between,” and an after-party at Camp Kingston. Originally from Long Island, NY, and now a resident of the Hudson Valley, musician and photographer Bill Patrick has spent the last two decades DJing around the world while calling Berlin his home.

From February to November 2023, Patrick accompanied his long-time friend, world-renowned electronic music artist Seth Troxler, on an epic ten-month world tour. During those ten months, the pair passed through four continents, twenty countries and over forty cities. Combining elements of photojournalism, music photography, and portraiture, Patrick documented this fast-paced journey using various analog cameras. The resulting photographs offer an intimate glimpse into life on the road and a kaleidoscopic reflection on velocity. Most importantly, In Between is an ode to friendship.

We shared a moment with Bill Patrick as he prepares for his photo exhibit and after-party this Saturday night.

INSIDE+OUT Upstate NY: How did you and Seth Troxler first meet?

Bill Patrick: We met in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, around 2005 at some outdoor party. He was DJing, or maybe I was. Regardless, a few mutual friends were insistent that we meet. It was one of those things, “Oh, you gotta meet Seth; you guys will love each other!”

So we met, and 20 years later, we still love each other. 

INSIDE+OUT: How does the East Coast DJ scene differ from Berlin?

Bill Patrick:  Overall, dance and club culture are much more ingrained in Europe. While the New York scene will always have a special place in my heart, Berlin, and much of Europe, continues to set the standard with its parties, clubs, and deeply knowledgeable crowds.

INSIDE+OUT: What does it mean for you to hold this book in your hands, and what do you want people to take away from this?

Bill Patrick: It means everything to me. We live in a digital age, so creating something tangible feels truly special. More than anything, I hope people connect with some of the photos and find a bit of beauty in them.

INSIDE+OUT: How are you adjusting to life in the Hudson Valley, and what are some of your favorite places?

Bill Patrick: Life up here is quiet and peaceful. It’s a nice juxtaposition with my fast-paced work life. I travel often and spend a lot of time in the city, but I’m always happy to come home.

Some of my favorite spots include Aba’s in Rhinebeck, Samuel’s Sweet Shop for Coffee, Casa Ziki in Woodstock, Tivoli General, Sushi Makio in Kingston, and Silvia in Woodstock. I enjoy swimming at my favorite swimming hole, summer sunsets at Claremont Historic Park, exploring The CCS Museum, and sledding at Mills Mansion. I could go on!
