Inside the Studio With Ceramicist R.A. Pesce

By inside + out | February 13, 2025

R.A. Pesce is a Hudson, New York-based ceramic artist whose one-of-a-kind pieces reflect his connection to the natural world. Influenced by brutalist and art deco design from his early days as a designer and antique dealer, his ceramic vessels explore the interplay of volume, space and negative space. Each wheel-thrown piece is carefully handcrafted, revealing complex, deconstructed patterns that draw inspiration from the landscapes of the Hudson Valley, which he now calls home. Through his work, Pesce demonstrates the power of creative expression as a personal necessity and a means to foster growth and change in the world.

INSIDE+OUT: Where are you originally from, and how did you wind up in the Hudson Valley?

R.A. Pesce: Originally from Brooklyn, NY, I wound up in the Hudson Valley after falling in love with it while visiting friends. The beauty of the landscape, wide-open skies, and friendly people made it an easy decision.

What inspired you to become an artist, and what was your journey?

Growing up, I never thought I would be anything but an artist; all my aspirations were art-related. My ceramic journey started when I watched a TV show on the process when I was about four years old. In high school, I asked my art teacher to show me how to use his personal potter’s wheel; it was love at first sight! From there I studied ceramics under Byron Temple at Pratt Institute. My working career as a designer often included ceramics and also included time as an antique dealer specializing in Arts and Crafts ceramics and textiles. Today, I handcraft ceramic vessels full-time.

How does living in the Hudson Valley affect the kinds of work you create?

The Hudson Valley is great! I mostly draw inspiration from nature, specifically rock formations, trees, vines, caves, etc.

Where do you find the greatest inspiration for your work?

The seed of my work is in nature, but I also find that as I create, the work itself inspires me the most.

What has most the most challenging aspect of your work?

The most challenging aspect of my current work is directly including the use of negative space. The three-dimensional aspects of a piece are deepened and set free by cutting open areas, allowing light and air to permeate the work.

Has your work changed over time?

All creative work evolves over time, it’s part of the process.  The simple exploration of volume and space leads to more complex manipulation as you explore and gain knowledge of yourself and your work.

How do you define success as an artist?

Art is the right making of that which has to be made (my definition).  Success as an artist is measured by the amount of truth spoken in his/her work. Art is from within, and expressing that inner truth is what makes art successful.

Tell us something about yourself people would be surprised to know.

Most people would be surprised to know that as a young adult, I spent time in a religious order of monks.

Why is creative expression important for the World?

If there was no creative expression, the World and the Universe would not evolve and cease to exist.

And for you personally?

For me, if I was not able to create and express myself through my art, I would have no life worth living.
