By inside + out | July 29, 2022

There are good reasons why mid-century modern homes are in such high demand, and this upstate NY beauty checks off each one: open-concept layout clean lines √ muted curves a deliberate lack of ornamentation expansive windows √. On top of that, this magnificent home was designed and built by Aaron Resnick, a colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright (one of the principal architects of Usonia, Wright’s utopian community in Pleasantville)With that said, we are super excited to share this lovely home in Lagrangeville, NY. And, if it was up to us, the white couch would come with the house! #obsessed

Just 70 miles north of NYC, ensconced on over 8 secluded acres and nestled among a healthy stand of old-growth Norway spruce, you’ll find 205 Emans, a quintessential example of the mid-century modern style. A core tenet of Resnick’s architecture philosophy was to design properties in harmony with nature and this is readily apparent in every aspect of the home. While the design is striking in its originality, it’s also approachable. It’s the kind of home that invites you to stay a while.

INSIDE

The interior of this mid-century home radiates both ease and sophistication. A wall of glass, stacked bluestone walls and an open plan provide an instant and visceral connection to the property’s natural elements and surroundings. The many windows and twelve skylights allow sunlight to permeate every room in the house.

A mix of high-end materials including red slate floors, birch cabinetry, redwood shelves, and exposed wood beams cement the connection between the interior and the outdoors. Solar gains during the day contribute to the home’s energy efficiency. The kitchen retains the original cabinetry, decorative tile work and substantial built-ins.

In addition to the three bedrooms, there are two bonus spaces, one with high-end sound dampening panels and multiple walls of windows that is currently a home office and another small room that could serve as a kid’s playroom or additional office.

OUTSIDE

An impressively long driveway leads to the house which is perched atop a plateau with 360-degree seasonal mountain views and not a single neighbor in sight. Multiple outdoor spaces provide various options for relaxation and entertainment.

Stone steps lead to the heated in-ground pool which is surrounded by an extensive bluestone terrace with both farm and mountain views.

Slightly down the driveway is a separate meadow that would be an ideal spot for an accessory dwelling unit. Sloping gently down the back of the property is a walking path that meanders along the adjacent farm which could be extended into a more significant hiking trail. Millbrook, Beacon and Rhinebeck are all a short drive away. Just minutes to the Taconic State Parkway and 15 minutes to Metro-North station at New Hamburg.
