The Lockwood Gallery Presents A New Experiential Exhibit: “THE LIBRARIAN” July 13-August 11
The Lockwood Gallery in Kingston, NY, has an exciting, not-to-be-missed installation titled “THE LIBRARIAN”—The Life and Times of a Special Collections Library Curator.
Step into The Lockwood Gallery for “The Librarian” and you’ll find an immersive gallery transformed into a library: Paintings, drawings, and sculptures are organized and installed by Special Collections, expertly curated by the person referred to as “THE LIBRARIAN.” Each work in this exhibition—sometimes literally and sometimes metaphorically—represents one of the many Special Collections found in the Library, such as astronomy, archaeology, geology, geography, cartography, 19th-century music manuscripts, mathematics, children’s books, rare books, and restricted books.
Thought-provoking “restricted books” are sculptures of books within cages, a beautiful card catalog with allusory poems written on cards within and around the vintage display. Also not to be missed is the Librarian’s impressive “personal office” in the conference room, in which Stanford Kay‘s extraordinary handling of light and color creates exquisite narratives of large bookcase paintings spanning 60″ x 48″ each. There will be two interactive areas where guests can explore and create their own art. The first is located in the Children’s Literature area, and the second is next to the Fottage works by Vincent Pidone.
The exhibit’s list of lauded participating artists includes Sydney Cash, Marieken Cochius, Anthony Finta, Willie Gary, Leslie Giuliani, Carole Kunstadt, Greg Slick, and Mimi Young—many of whom are based in the Hudson Valley and the surrounding region.
This conceptual exhibit runs from July 13 through August 11 and will coincide with the Hudson Valley’s exceedingly popular Upstate Art Weekend as a part of their event that runs July 18-21.
“THE LIBRARIAN is not your average narrative; the scale and number of artists required to tell the story is daunting.” “Originally conceived when I was reminded of Stanford Kay’s spectacular Bookcase Paintings, the exhibition is ever-evolving—works are still finding themselves falling in and then out as it all becomes clearer, stronger, and more solidly realized. THE LIBRARIAN is created to be a different kind of gallery experience. We hope you enjoy it.” – Alan Goolman, curator at The Lockwood Gallery.
